The
Federal Resume is probably the least understood because
it often gets confused with a private-sector resume. First,
a private-sector resume is no longer than one or two pages.
A federal resume can be as long as you want it to be.
Federal resumes can be as long as a SF-171, but the SF-171
is not generated by you and also have the forms's printed
lines and boxes. Also, some of the information requested
on the SF-171 is not needed on a federal resumes. The
higher-level the position you apply for, the more detailed
your federal resume need to be. Federal resumes that are
5 to 10 pages are acceptable. In the private-sector, a
resume could never be as long unless they were applying
for an upper-level academic position. If the vacancy announcements
states that you can submit "a resume, SF-171, or
OF-612," the kind of resume you should submit is
a federal resume.

The SF-171, Application for Federal
Employment, the OPM 1170 supplemental application forms,
and certain related application forms, became obsolete
on December 31, 1994, when Office of Management and Budget
approval for the forms expired. Beginning on January 1,
1995, Federal agencies could no longer require the SF-171
as the only acceptable application form.
Applicants for Federal employment may now apply for employment
consideration using a resume; the Optional Application
for Federal Employment, form OF-612; or any other written
format of choice. Occasionally, when electronic application
processing systems are used, or when jobs require special
skills, other specialized application forms may be required.
Because the SF-171 is no longer an official form, the
Office of Personnel Management does not make the form
or software available.
The OPM 1170 forms were used for collecting additional
qualifications information from applicants, such as college
courses or professional certifications and training. This
information can now be supplied through other documents
such as a transcript or a narrative addendum to an application.
